Here at the Auroville Botanical Gardens we are working to create a place that celebrates the beauty and diversity of nature.
The plant world is amazing in its beauty, its adaptations to varying environments and in the way it provides our society with many of our needs.
Here at the gardens we hope to create and nurture relationships between our human society and the natural world.
Once we understand the importance of the environment to our society only then we will work together, more energetically, towards the creation of a sustainable future both for ourselves and the planet.
It is our aspiration that the work we do here will help lead people in this direction.

Our Team
By definition "gardens" mean "people" - and the Auroville Botanical Gardens are no exception.
They are the direct expression of the team that works there.
We are diverse in age, origin, ability, commitment, and energy.
We come from over 15 different countries, speak a huge number of different languages, and have radically different opinions about most things, but the one thing we have in common is a joy in the institution of tea breaks.
Whether hot and sweaty from working in the full sun, meditative and calm from weeding in the shade or bug eyed and jittery from manipulating data on the computer -
the tea break is welcomed by all.
Of course we are always on the look out for more people to join the merry band, and are happy to find a place for everyone who would like to join in what ever their previous experience or future aspiration.
History
Work at the gardens started in August 2000.
The first work was the plantation of the conservation area (Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest), which is found at the eastern end of the gardens.
Then over the next months we erected our windmill, got our water system working, established our plant nursery and built the first storeroom.
The following year we began to plant the arboretum, and develop the plans for the rest of the garden.
Our education programs started in the first few years, and by 2007 we had built our environmental education center.
At the same time we initiated our first outside consultancy projects to spread our knowledge and create an income stream to help us to sustain and develop the gardens.
Today the work continues, the number of people involved has grown and the work at the gardens develops and more ideas keep coming to keep us motivated and engaged.
